To earn my freedom, I must submit.

I’m facing years in prison. My crime? Exposing the sordid secrets of Dexia’s magical elite. In my oppressive territory, mages hold all the power, magical tech is outlawed, and sexuality is repressed.

At my sentencing I expect a bored judge, but instead I get a crowd, reporters, and a handsome mage everyone seems to fear. He makes me kneel at his feet, and offers me a deal. Serve six months as his plaything, and leave a free woman. Shame burns through me, but I accept.

He's Leopold Rahl, Dexia's new Lord Commander, the strongest mage in living memory. He's hunted me for months. He means to see me punished.

And I’ve fallen right into his trap.

Zara began writing in her thirties after reading a series of “fade to black” fantasy books and wondering why the hell the author didn’t make them smuttier.

Challenge, accepted.

She loves creating magical fantasy worlds, turbulent relationships and dark, kinky heroes (who could be villains if you squint a bit.)

When she’s not thinking up ways to torment her characters, Zara lives on the beautiful Gold Coast, Australia with two kiddos and a husband who make her real life far more magical than her stories.

I REALLY wanted to like this one.

The writing style, technically, is good, and it flows pretty well. The setup grabs your attention from the start: Liv is an anti-government agitator arrested for bringing humiliation to the upper classes, and she chooses to be the Lord Commander Leo's consort for six months rather than spend years in prison. This should be a recipe for delicious dub-con, right?

Wrong. Or at least, sort of wrong.

❌ Plot-wise, this is like two different books mashed into one. The first half is purely relationship development between Liv and Leo; the second half is purely political intrigue. The transition was clunky and noticeable. I began massively skim-reading this book after the 50% mark, and it lost my interest so thoroughly that it took me TWO WEEKS to finish.

❌ Related to the above: by squeezing in the development of a fully-fledged relationship in just the first 40-50,000 words of a book, the author made everything happen way too quickly for a dark romance. They exchanged sincere ILYs at literally halfway in! They were, to be frank, nauseatingly loved-up and sweet in a way that makes a mockery of 'dark romance'. Premises like this one make you expect emotional depth to the characters, and that was lacking.

❌ Leo is, essentially, a guy playing at dub-con. He's not really committed to it; you don't get a real sense of 'this is a dangerous, villainous guy' like you do from e.g. an Anna Zaires book. He's a nice person who just enjoys some BDSM and even brings Liv into it gently. I'm all for nice heroes, but this - I repeat is supposed to be a dark romance, and it didn't feel that way at all.

❌ As for Liv, her character was disappointing. She falls in love with Leo - the guy who's her captor - within what feels like milliseconds. I'm sorry, this woman was an anti-government protestor? Isn't the literal Lord Commander supposed to embody everything she loathes? Instead, she fell for him like a ton of bricks. I had far more sympathy for her friend Hex, who's left to rot in prison because Leo's not attracted to her, than I did for simpering Liv.

The next book looks like it'll have a genuine villain as the hero, so I'll probably read that. I just hope the pacing etc is fixed.

Not bad. Pretty good writing for a debut book. The flow and consistency could have been a bit better though. The hero's personality changed too much and sometimes he acted way younger than his age. Also besides falling in love with each other, there wasn't that much development between the two.

This is my personal preference, but it made it hard to like the book because there was so much of it, but there is a lot of public humiliation in it and he likes it too. Maybe it would be easier to read if the heroine liked it, but it was only the hero, and the things he made her do in public and what to wear went so against her comfort and my comfort. I also like my heros more possessive, and while he doesn't share, he's all for getting her naked in front of everyone and making her wear as little as possible, or taking off her clothes for punishment (he made her lift her dress up in front of everyone including his brother, and face the wall for punishment) the king remarked how if he didn't want people to insult her, he should have made her do the things, and I definitely agree. He belittles the heroine in public but then gets mad when others belittle her too, so I definitely would have liked if he kept that stuff in the bedroom, because it made it hard to like him😅

This is going to be the hottest read of 2022.

A dark fantasy romance about a rebel journalist and the mage who finally captures her, this story is everything you never knew you needed. Deadly threats, scorching heat, and a hefty dose of kink, all wrapped up in a thrilling world of magic and technology. It keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole way through.

Original, creative, dark and captivating

I would not have believed that this is the author’s debut novel. Just what a debut. Original, creative, dark and captivating.

The author created a complex and yet easy to understand world. Not just one area and a few characters but a nation with multiple territories and different customs, behaviors and people. For something that should be complex the author does a great job describing everything in an interesting and memorable way.

I did like the romance and the main characters, and although their dynamic wasn’t the most original, it was still a steamy and well written part of the story. I actually enjoyed the political and fantasy aspects of the story a bit more than the love story. I think that the characters featured in the next book may capture my attention a little bit more than a political side.

I’m very much looking forward to book two and seeing more of this world.

What a fabulous world! If you're looking for a magical world where our FMC is slightly experienced but wholly out of her depth, this is the book for you. I normally mostly read RH but this one kept me hooked until the final chapter. Mystery, betrayal, hidden bloodlines and fun s€xy times are only a glimpse of what awaits you in this story. Teleport yourself into this new world 😍

I find it very hard to belive that this is Zara J. Black's debut novel. It's exceptionally well written, the plot is engaging and the romance is scorching hot. The world building is very well done as well. Ms. Black created a magical world with it's own class system where the mages lord over the non magic users. Liv is a non-mage school teacher who tries to expose the corrupt government and gets in the crosshairs of the new Lord Commander who forces her to strike a bargain in order to avoid a long prison sentence. Thus begins Liv's 6 months of servitude at the hands of Leopold. I will say that this book didn't feel particularly dark to me. It started off as more of a gray romance and turned rather sweet halfway through, despite the unequal power dynamic. While the first half of the book is relationship driven, it becomes more plot heavy in the second half. There's a lot of twists and action at that point and things move fast. While Liv and Leo get their happy ending, the overall story isn't over and I can't wait for book two!

Disclaimer:
This book contains adult dark themes such as BDSM that is arguably consensual, torture, rapey vibes, graphic scenes and I DO NOT recommend it if you are underage or triggered by those.

4 HOT STARS!

Let me start by saying that I wasn't prepared for such an angsty, hot, and addicting story. In fact, I felt it became a little too much drama for me towards the end. However, I couldn't put the book down and practically inhaled it.

Where this story really shined for me was in the description of the chemistry between the two main leads. It was very believable, even though it was 'wrong' in essence.

This book revolves mostly around Leo (AKA Lord Commander) and Liv's complicated relationship. He is an almighty mage and lord commander while she is a criminal that outed his best friend on her website, which led his friend to take his own life. She did it to support the non-mage community but didn't look into it enough to realize that his friend was being framed. Leo thinks that she did it on purpose and wants to punish her himself.
Leo offers Liv a deal, serve six months as his consort (nice wording for a whore) or go to prison for fifteen years. To sweeten the deal, he agrees to shorten Liv's best friend's sentence by 5 years if Liv behaves. She takes the deal and he uses it to the FULL advantage.
It is important to note that they live in a very modest society, where sex is saved for marriage and kept vanilla. Not many agree with Leo's choices and the repercussions... Well, they could be deadly ;)

The smut in this book was on point, keeping me interested and a recurring theme throughout. The other, supporting characters were interesting as well and I'm intrigued to see what happens in the next book.

Note: Even though this book the first in this trilogy, it does end with a HEA.

I started this book right before bed, and that was a mistake. The premise for this dark fantasy romance is killer and it pulls you right into the unique world of mage aristocracy and magi-tech from page one.

While the worldbuilding and writing were excellent, Zara J. Black deserves special credit for crafting an excellent cast of characters. In quite a few romance books I've read, just about everyone except the main couple feels expendable and paper-thin. Not this one. I genuinely liked pretty much all of the main cast. Shoutout to the heroine, Liv. She felt real, and there wasn't a single time I rolled my eyes at her actions or didn't buy her motivations.

I also appreciated that the book made room for things besides sex and romance (although those were stellar and very hot too!). Ruled By Magic isn't as dark as I usually prefer, and I'll admit to being more into dark romance for the darkness than the romance, but there was a meaty plot of court intrigue to shore up the romance.

If you do love your romance, rest assured that this is a well-developed and very satisfying one, tied together with super hot kink and a dubious consent situation (at the beginning) that was far more compelling than I was expecting.

So yeah. Ruled by Magic is a well-written dark fantasy romance with excellent characters, a robust plot both in and outside of the romance, and very well-thought-out worldbuilding. Highly recommended!

I devoured this book, I'm not kidding when I say it hooks you from the start 🙌🏻 this is always a plus for me, I love it when we get to dive straight in!! This is 100% a DARK fantasy. Like seriously, our main girl loves herself some pretty dark/kinky shit. Am I judging? Hell no. Livet and Leo go on one hell of a ride in this book. Do they fall in love at first sight? Perhaps in their own very twisted way 😅🤣... Liv has a choice to make, 15 years in prison or submit to the lord commander and become his consort... well, we all know the path she goes down, it wouldnt make a great story if she didnt! 😉 I'm not going to say much more, I want it all to be a twisted surprise for you! Enjoy the darkness! Or should I say embrace the darkness 😉😈

Looking forward to the next book in the series, I was surprised to see who the main characters will be!! 😮🤐

This book was fantastic. So much so that I couldn't believe it was a first book from the author.
You have a man who wants revenge and to humiliate a woman who made a mistake. What he didn't expect was for her to submit so beautifully that he fell in love with her.

Some people would consider this dark because the scenes aren't vanilla but I don't agree. Was he mean at times? Yeah, but he had his reasons which were valid. It was just a terrible thing that happened but she paid for her part in the whole thing.

I honestly can't wait for the next book!

Hot, dominant mages? A bit of dark mixed in with the sweet? A well-thought-out plot? Kinky fun? Magic as a sex toy? Um, yes!

This book has everything I didn't know I was missing in my life. The relationship between Liv and the Lord Commander is HOT and romantic. The steam keeps you turning those pages and the story leaves you truly satisfied at the end.

This book is a fun dark fantasy romance with just the right amount of spice and kink.

Since this was the first time I read something by this author I was a little concerned that the book would have no plot from how the first few chapters went from 0 to 1000 in the romance department. But boy am I glad that my concerns were squashed quickly. This is a fast read that will leave you loving characters and wanting more information on all of them. I counting down the days until I can get my hands on another book, I am desperate to fine out how this story will unfold.

As this author is new to me, I can say I’m impressed. Zara had immense creativity in her description of the characters and surroundings. The storyline was always evolving and expanding. The dynamic between Leo and Livet was explosive and full of fight and passion. I’m looking forward to the next book to see if we find a different side to Prince Adante.

I couldn't put this dark romance down! The romance scenes are hot, kinky, and well placed throughout the book. The plot was well thought out and very well written.
The characters are varied and interesting. Liv, the female main character, has a depth of emotion that is gripping to read. Her guilt over enjoying certain things of her captivity is so well portrayed. Leo is complicated. He seems like such a powerful, domineering guy, then SPOILERS.
Zara created an interesting world with different countries/cities and cultures along with an colorful magic system.
I can't wait for her next book.
100% reccomend!

4.5 stars rounded up.

What a great, hot read, full of intrigue and suspense!

Liv, the MC, was very likeable. I found myself sympathising with her and rooting for her throughout the book. Her choices generally made sense and her character arc was believable. She wasn't your usual 'mouthy' heroine, which was a breath of fresh air. She was thoughtful and what I'd describe as 'quietly clever'.

I didn't warm to Leo, hence the 4.5 stars. He came across as selfish and everything always went back to being about him/his desires. And the wind always blew his way- he pretty much got everything he wanted and more- so I never had a chance to empathise with him. Personally, I thought Liv deserved better.

Looking forward to Book 2! The new characters seem very interesting.

Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

Amazing story that seamlessly balances a plot line with smutty goodness.

While reading I often forgot this was a debut novel and not that of a well published author. Excellently written with no plot holes I can recount and nothing really stopping me throughout to question why characters are doing what their doing.

Would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys fantasy/sci-fi with a good plot and good smut sprinkled throughout.

I was provided a ARC but my opinions are my own.

This book was everything I was not expecting and it was AMAZING! I consumed this book on my day off and I literally just couldn’t stop myself.
Livet Spencer is a non-mage in a world where mages rule supreme. She fights the oppression of those in power along with the help of a friend, Hex. Although, this does not end up working in their favor and both end up in front of the young, and strikingly handsome, Lord Commander Leopold Rahl as their judge and jury.

The relationship between Liv and Leo does not start out on the best foot. Leo is determined to shame her for her actions and put her on display for all to see as part of her punishment. At first, I wasn’t sure what to think of him. But, the more the story went on, the more complex his feelings for Liv became, the more I kinda loved him! Liv is resilient and willing to do whatever it takes to fight for herself, her friend, and eventually Leo when the time comes.

I also liked that the sexy scenes (which were 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 by the way) fit within the story as part of their relationship dynamic; as they connect and discover something new about themselves with each other. It added a different sort of *it* factor for me that made the story more intriguing.

I also have to say that I loved the world building that happened in this story and I can’t wait to see how it will grow in the next book!

Thrilling and very sexy new series!

WOW! That was a very entertaining, thrilling and sexy story. Right from the very start, Liv and the Lord Commander instantly hook you with the way their relationship starts – it’s intense and you have no idea where this ultimate decision is going to take them. There are some dark parts to their relationship but also some very sweet moments that peek through as the story progresses.

The amount of imagery and complex worldbuilding that this author creates brings this dynamic story to life on the pages. Each character is unique, multifaceted and brings out intense feelings of either hate or love while reading. The story has some dark elements, bdsm, violence, drama and danger that keeps you riveted to your set unable to look away and turning the pages quickly to see what will happen next.

Really well written story that is unique, dark, depraved, titillating and very thrilling. I enjoyed every second of it and can’t wait to see where this amazing new author takes us next in the series. I am looking forward to reading more about these characters and this world.

So, you know when you read a bunch of books, and you get really good at predicting plot? Well. Not here. I thought the book was going to center around the event that happens in the first 2 chapters. BUT NO. It gets SO MUCH BETTER. The forced proximity trope is present, but not for nearly as long as I expected. After the story took a turn, it really ramped up the action and morphed into this fantasy-politics swirl of amazingness. (making up words, yes I know...)

My absolutely favorite part of this is the Lord Commander. Who knew a guy in his 30's could be 1) Hot 2) Emotionally Mature and 3) Logical-thinking. I mean, honestly, his ability to have real and actual conversations about things like kink and the shame associated with the world they are in, politics, blame, and the plot points that unfold? I'm pleasantly surprised.

I am really looking forward to book two. It does NOT end in a cliffhanger, but does end with an idea of what will be prevalent in book 2.

A dark fantasy romance about a fierce rebel activist and the domineering mage that seeks to control her.

Zara J. Black’s dark fantasy romance debut, Ruled by Magic, was unbelievably amazing! Black’s ability to create a unique new world where magic users and non-magic users are divided as the mages seek to rule over those without power, was utterly captivating and a nice dive into the dark side of a world ruled by magic.

Our fierce non magic using FMC Livet is a teacher living in a magic dominated world. Seeing the injustices that occur due to a corrupt magically dominated government, she uses her words as a journalist/activist to bring light to the discriminations of those without magic and the misdoings of those with…until she’s caught and sentenced for her crimes and is looking at many, many years behind bars.

When given the chance to avoid a long prison sentence in exchange for becoming the Lord Commanders consort, she agrees to become his play thing…as long as he lightens the sentence of her friend as well. It’s only 6 months right? Surely she can survive anything he throws at her….

However, what she doesn’t realize is that Leo, the arrogant and handsome Lord Commander, is on a ruthless mission of revenge and only wishes to bring Livet down for the downfall of his dear friend—at all costs. And let’s just say, with a domineering dark side with a passion for kink and control, that it may be a very fun and delicious ride for our sweet and unsuspecting heroine. ;)

What starts out as a punishment, and a show of dominance and control, soon evolves into so much more, especially as Liv finds that the torture that Leo brings is exactly what she needs/wants and seeks to earn Leo’s forgiveness for the wrongs she inadvertently made. When deadly threats are made that threaten them both, they soon realize there’s so much more involved to the game they’ve been playing.

“What a strange world, where pain morphed into pleasure. Captivity and hopelessness into something else.”

The world building alone was beyond phenomenal with so many different groups, nations, territories and facets created within just this single story you’d think you’d be overwhelmed—but you totally weren’t! Each one was just as detailed and intriguing as the last. The characters were well rounded, and evolved beautifully within the storyline, and the plot flowed seamlessly with just the right amount of conspiracy and intrigue to suck you right in. And the master/slave dynamics between the two main characters was deliciously steamy! I loved seeing how their relationship grew from captivity, to friendship and ultimately to freedom.

Overall if you love a good forced proximity, enemies to lovers, dark fantasy romance that’s based in a unique world divided by magic and technology users, that’s also filled with tons of scorching heat and kinky connections, intriguing political aspects and warring factions, and enough mystery and suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat guessing—this book is for you!

I finished this book in only a few days, but it's taken me over a week to get to reviewing because honestly, I'm not exactly sure how to sum up all my feelings on this story into a little review.
Wow. What a ride!
If you've read the other reviews, you know the basics: Liv works to reveal the secrets of the mostly-corrupt mages that rule over the non-mages. She gets caught and sentenced to years in prison, but the Lord Commander has other ideas up his sleeve, so he offers her six months as his consort in exchange for the prison time.
Of course she accepts, or there wouldn't be a fun sexy story to follow!
I was really impressed with the way the author plays with the reader's emotions. When Liv was afraid, I felt that fear. when she was happy, I shared her joy. In the scene where she goes to meet the Lord Commander alone for the first time, I was terrified! When He humiliated her, I felt so ashamed. Sometimes I wanted to slap his face or scream at him, and then other times I wanted to stroke his cheek just as Liv did.
I really enjoyed that, because I LIVE for the emotional roller-coaster in books.
I loved that this story actually had a plot, and more going on than just sex, but there was plenty of steamy scenes and they never felt forced in or unnatural.
There's more behind the LC's bargain than just wanting a consort, as Liv soon finds out. And there's far more going on than either of them realize, and it comes up to bite them. Beautiful clothing, interesting foods, cool settings and magic systems. The author did a really good job of pulling you into the world of the story and just going along for the ride!
I look forward to book two!

This. Was. Fire.

I enjoyed the world-building smattered through the pages instead of just smashing me in the face and bogging me down with info dumping.

The beginning portion was solidly relationship driven.

I found Leo to be a bit of a marshmallow and I don't quite know if he was just playing at dub/con out of illegal intrigue or if it was actually part of him. I wanted him a bit harsher, but with Liv's delicate sort of personality, I don't think it would have worked as well as it did. They're both soft in their own ways.

Liv, well, I don't really know what to make of her. She's alright. She's not massively rebellious... or ridiculously stubborn. She does have a desire to please, which she discovered right quick. I think a bit more of praise would have done her well. She seemed to shine under those types of moments.

The second half, the relationship took a back seat sort of role. It segued into political intrigue, but the intimate scenes kept their fire. I do think they spouted off their "I love you" too soon, but it makes sense due to the chaos around them.

Liv's friend Hex... I hate her. I've never been fond of the overbearing, over the top, interfering, I just want what's best for you, type of best friend, and Hex is no different. I found her abrasive and obnoxious.

Overall, it's a really solid start to a series and I'm not going to pretend Adante, the wicked prince, doesn't intrigue me.

If relationship driven, magical worlds, with loads of steamy scenes, are your jam, you can't go wrong with this one.

I received this book as an ARC for my honest review and feedback.

Wow....

If you enjoy Mages, Humans, power play, and borderline bondage play, with a degradation & praise kink, with AFTERCARE!...this book is for you! I literally stayed up till 2 AM because I couldn't put it down! I finished it in about 48 hrs!

Possible spoilers!

Liv and Hex take down powerful mages who are bending the law to their benefit, until they are caught and are faced with the punishment by the new Lord Commander. Liv is given a choice, honestly I would have made the same decision. There is lots of power play, sometimes in the CNC format, but nothing is ever done that isn't wanted and after the scenes there is the most important, aftercare. There was also some scenes that gave me a side eye as in there might be some side stories going on that we may get a better look into later on. I was stressing in the last 25% of the book, then rage cheering! You defiantly get a HEA with this story. <3

This book had me gasping out loud, not only from the smeggy scenes but from the plot! I'm excited to read the second one!! And the Third!!
